avocado acai bowl

I was at a wedding on a tiny island off the south west of France when I met Damien Binois, CEO and founder of Nossa! Fruits, the only company in France that directly imports and sells organic acai.

So, “superfruit” is not a new concept, but it is one to describe the benefits of acai, and I found Damien’s story compelling.  Acai, for those of you that know it, is a berry found in the Amazon in Brazil.  It’s a fragile fruit, and must be either consumed or frozen within 2 days after harvest.

It’s worth it.

Acai is loaded with vitamins, antioxidants, and plenty of omega fatty acids, making it a delicious and naturally creamy source of energy.  It originally started as an aid to athletes for stamina, until the rest of the population noticed its effect on their mood and physical ability, and the fact that it’s supreme when blended frozen.  Voila, we have “The Acai Bowl”.

Damien’s story unfolded as he discovered this Acai culture while studying abroad for his Masters Business Program in Brazil.  The fruit struck him (not physically, well, maybe) and he knew that would be the topic for his thesis.  Several years and many trips to The Amazon later, Damien’s Nossa! Fruits is the only direct importer of organic acai berries to France and they do a damn fine job.

I had a great time making an Acai Bowl with him in the Bubble Child Paris kitchen.  He asked me what I imagined with the fruit after having tried Nossa!’s Acai juices, and I put together a combination of something creamy with avocado and banana, slightly sweet with stevia and raspberry, slightly tart with lemon zest and 100% dark chocolate, and a little spicy with some wasabi.

It’s a real good way to wake up.  At any time of the day.

Check out Nossa! Fruits for information on how to get their Acai, and check out the recipe below if you wanna make what we did in the video.  :)
